Dry Eye Syndrome is a chronic condition that develops when the eyes do not produce and maintain enough tears to keep the surface of the eye lubricated. Also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca, dry eye syndrome occurs when the eye does not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly.

Our team of eye care professionals at Appleton Eye Associates have extensive experience in the treatment of dry eye syndrome. When a patient comes to us with dry eye symptoms – which include dry irritated eyes, redness, watery discharge, and blurred vision – our opticians can prescribe various treatments that include Intense Pulsed Light therapy (IPL).

To treat dry eye syndrome, we use state-of-the-art equipment and technology from medical device maker Lumenis. When receiving IPL treatment, a patient’s eyelids are closed and protected with eye shields. The patient then receives light pulses that are administered by the optician using a small wand-like device. Depending on a patient’s level of improvement, between one and four IPL treatments are conducted every four to six weeks.
