Presbyopia

Typically occurring in middle and old age, presbyopia is farsightedness caused by the loss of elasticity in the lens of the eye. The condition, also called age-related farsightedness, is marked by a gradual, age-related loss of the eyes' ability to focus actively on nearby objects. Farsightedness usually becomes noticeable in the early to mid-40s and tends to increase in severity until the mid-60s.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the central portion of the retina, the layer of the eye that sends the images we see to the brain. The condition, also known as age-related macular degeneration, may result in blurred or no vision in the center of the visual field. In its early stages, there are often no symptoms, but over time some people experience a gradual worsening of vision.

Conjunctivitis

Often called “pink eye”, conjunctivitis is a common eye disease, especially in children, that can be caused by a viral or bacterial infection.  The condition is caused by the swelling or inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin, transparent layer of tissue that lines the inner surface of the eyelid and covers the white part of the eye. Causes may or may not be infectious.

Concussion

A concussion is a serious injury to the brain resulting from the rapid acceleration or deceleration of brain tissue within the skull. Rapid movement causes brain tissue to change shape, which can stretch and damage brain cells. This damage also causes chemical and metabolic changes within the brain cells, making it more difficult for cells to function and communicate.

Pediatric Eye Exams

A children’s eye test is an expert assessment of your child’s eye health and vision performed by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. Studies have shown that 80% of learning is visual, which means that if your child is having difficulty seeing clearly, his or her learning can be affected. To ensure your children have the visual resources they need to grow and develop normally, their eyes and vision should be checked by a children’s eye doctor at certain stages of development.

Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry Eye Syndrome (DES) is a chronic condition that develops when the eyes do not produce and maintain enough tears to keep the surface of the eye lubricated. DES is also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Dry eye occurs when either the eye does not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly.

Glaucoma

Glaucoma, the second leading cause of blindness, is a complex disease in which damage to the optic nerve leads to progressive, irreversible vision loss. Glaucoma is comprised of a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, the health of which is vital for good vision. This damage is often caused by an abnormally high pressure in the eyes.

 Cataracts

Cataracts are caused by a build-up of protein that clouds the eye’s lens, which can lead to blurred vision and eventual blindness. Cataracts occurs when the lens of the eye develops cloudy patches. Over time these patches usually grow bigger, causing blurry, misty vision. There are different types of cataracts, depending on which part of the eye’s lens is affected.

Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a common vision condition that causes blurred vision that occurs when the cornea is irregularly shaped or sometimes because of the curvature of the lens inside the eye. The condition is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens that prevents light from focusing properly on the retina, the light-sensitive surface at the back of the eye.
