DR. LISA A. TRAVEIS JOINS APPLETON EYE ASSOCIATES

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Lisa A. Traveis, O.D., has recently partnered with Appleton Eye Associates and she is currently treating patients in our Ipswich location. Dr. Traveis, who has been practicing optometry for nearly 35 years, joined the Appleton team in September 2020.

After spending several years as an Assistant Professor and an Associate Professor at the New College of Optometry in Boston, she founded Traveis Eye Care in Ipswich in 1995. In addition to her teaching experience and treating patients in the Ipswich office, Dr. Traveis also works as a Staff Optometrist for the Massachusetts Department of Corrections where she treats inmates in Boston area prisons who are afflicted with various ocular diseases.

"We are very pleased to have Dr. Traveis join our team," said Dr. Kevin Gasiorowski, O.D., owner of Appleton Eye Associates. "She brings many years of optometry experience to our practice and her diverse set of skills that includes decades of expertise in treating ocular diseases makes her an invaluable addition to Appleton Eye Associates."

Dr. Traveis, who became interested in medical sciences at a young age, said that one of the primary things she likes most about being an optometrist is her interaction with patients of all ages, and the satisfaction of helping people live fuller lives by addressing their eyesight issues.

“My favorite part of the job is interacting with patients – I’m definitely a people person," Dr. Traveis said. "I’ve gotten to know so many patients and their families over the years. I have some patients who’ve been coming to me for decades, including six of them who are now over 100 years old.”

In addition to her more recent experience, Dr. Traveis also completed fellowships and residencies in Boston at the New England College of Optometry (NEWENCO), The Cotting School for Handicapped Children, the Brighton Marine Public Health Center, as well as the Providence Veterans Administration Hospital in Providence, R.I. During her clinical fellowship, she was instrumental in expanding funding for and raising awareness of the Mobile Eye Van, which provided care for primarily elderly and shut-in residents in Boston.

In an interesting twist of fate, she was approached in the mid 1980’s by the founder of Appleton Eye Associates, Dr. Daniel Appleton, who wanted Dr. Traveis to join his team. Although it was a difficult decision at the time, she decided to accept a fellowship at NEWENCO and respectfully declined Dr. Appleton’s offer.

“I think it’s ironic – and wonderful – that over 30 years later I’m now part of the Appleton team. I’ve come full circle,” she said.

Dr. Traveis received a Bachelor of Science degree from Regis College, a Master of Science degree in counseling psychology from Northeastern University, and a Doctor of Optometry degree from The New England College of Optometry.

An avid gardener, Dr. Traveis loves growing roses at the home she shares with her husband of 34 years, Robert. She enjoys watching college football and is a fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats, her daughter’s alma mater. Also, as a volunteer for German Shepherd Rescue of New England, she works as a screener for potential adopting families. A longtime Boxford resident, she and her husband enjoy spending time with their adult children Kate and Colin, as well as taking walks with their German Shepherd, Finn.
